Wesselman Woods provides environmental education and outdoor recreation experiences designed to awaken the senses and enrich the lives. It is a National Natural Landmark and a State Nature Preserve with over 190-acres of virgin bottomland hardwood forest, providing the perfect atmosphere for relaxing nature walks. It is the largest old-growth urban forest in the nation. The Nature Center features exhibits, events, wildlife observation areas and several live species of animals including owls, hawks, and snakes on display that have been injured or are not able to return to the wild.
The Nature Playscape is the newest addition. Open year round, this one-of-a-kind nature playscape is the largest in the United States offering three acres of unstructured play and exploration! A little dirt never hurt. This outdoor natural playground is designed for unstructured play and exploration. Getting wet and pssibly dirty is part of the fun. Stumps, logs, streams, boulders, and other materials are readily available to help kids explore the great outdoors with some good, not-so-clean, fun.
